Our first meeting with the Vermillion Recycling Center went pretty well. We met with Phyllis at the Recycling Center for our first meeting. While at the meeting, we discussed what we can bring to the organization, what needs the organization has, and information about Vermillion recycling. I learned a lot about recycling that I did not know. For instance, I learned what types of cardboard they can recycle and they can only recycle plastics with numbers one and two. It was very interesting to learn about the different types of cardboard and plastic. I feel like there are a lot of people in Vermillion that may not know exactly what can be recycled and what cannot be recycled. We talked about the organizations needs and what our group can do for them. One of the first needs we talked about was creating website about recycling in Vermillion and different ways that she can make updates to the website concerning the Vermillion public. Phyllis has stated that she is not very computer friendly and would need something that she could easily navigate. Next, we talked about creating a commercial about what can be recycled and what cannot be recycled and make it appealing to the University of South Dakota students has well as the Vermillion community.
It was my first time visiting the Vermillion Recycling Center and it was not exactly what I was expecting. When I first walked in, I wasn’t sure I was in the right place; it was very messy with a lot of stuff that needed to be recycled and was not recyclable. I was very confused and it was hard to find my way around the place to find her office. There was one very large cat sitting on a chair next the table where we would have our meeting. When I stepped into her office, there was another very large cat meowing at me. She said that they live there and they got fat because they caught all the mice that used to live there. It was very hard to imagine a thousand little mice running around that place and at the same time trying to hold a conversation. I tried not to make any judgments towards the facility and the organization but I can’t say that I would ever want to work there. I really enjoyed talking with her and she is a very nice lady who knows her information about recycling.
After talking with Mr. Grayson in class about our first client visit, he informed us that we should choose one avenue to go on instead of trying to tackle both the website and the commercial. Our group has not yet decided which road we are going to take. I feel that the organization could use a website more than a commercial because when I was trying to find information about Vermillion Recycling, I had to find information through the City of Vermillion website and it was very confusing. Also, I feel that on the website we can include information that we would be using in the commercial. Although, a commercial would be a great way to communicate to a large crowd, I feel the website would be more beneficial for this project.
