We met with Phyllis today at the Vermillion Recycling Center. It was my second visit to the center and I feel that I have learned valuable information about recycling and an understanding as to what our group is going to do for the organization. We discussed what information she would like to see on the website. Phyllis would like to see a bold update area where she is able to post updates concerning recycling around the Vermillion area. She told us that there are always issues that evolve about recycling that she would like the Vermillion community to know about but it takes an awful amount of time for the City of Vermillion to update their website. Then, we went through the Vermillion recycling brochure; we discussed certain parts that she would like to see on the website. She would like to see more visuals compared to works because who wants to read a website filled with boring text and no pictures. We are planning on adding a map of the Vermillion Recycling route including which days go to which routes; she is going to send us that to upload on the website. Then, she would like us to add which number can be recycled and which products fall under each category. Also, she encouraged us to visit the City of Vermillion website and see what information they have posted about recycling so that we are not repeating what they have.
After visiting for the second time with Phyllis, I feel comfortable to get started working on the website. Janelle and I have used Microsoft Front Page in our Education classes, so we are planning on putting our computer skills to good use to build the website. The Vermillion Recycling Center has not changed much since the last time we were there other than the cats being put in the office so they are not a distraction to us during the meeting. We are going to talk with Phyllis to get a tour of the landfill to better understand the type of issues they deal with on a day to day basis. I feel that this would be beneficial to our group because none of us have been there before. I hope that the website will help the people of Vermillion to understand what can be recycled and what cannot be. As a resident, I had no idea that recycling was such a process! Many residents of Vermillion recycle the wrong type of things that creates extra added work to their already busy recycling center.
As a group, we will be meeting next week to start working on the website. We are going to look at the City of Vermillion website and decide what information we do not need to add to the website we will be creating. Also, we are going to create a contract with Phyllis and present that to her in our next meeting, which will be in two weeks. If time allows for our project, we may tackle a video of what to recycle and what not to and include that on the website. I feel this would be a great way to integrate technology and college age students into the recycle project.
